Postdoctoral Research Fellows
Ahmed Khalil, Ph.D.
Dr. Khalil is a virologist interested in studying the immunobiology, pathogenesis, and prevention/control of viral diseases. His research focuses on generating and identifying novel potent prophylactic and therapeutic tools, e.g., vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, against various human pathogens including, but not limited to, influenza, SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (hMPV). Dr. Khalil obtained his Ph.D. from Yamaguchi University, Japan in 2021, where he studied avian influenza viruses and developed highly sensitive techniques for viral isolation from environmental samples. Also, he revealed a unique evolution of the 2009 pandemic A/H1N1 influenza viruses in swine populations compared with their counterparts circulating in humans. In March 2022, Dr. Khalil moved to the Texas Biomedical Research Institute as a postdoctoral scholar and was awarded the Cowles postdoctoral fellowship for working on developing prophylactics and therapeutics against influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. In February 2024, he joined Dr. Mousa's lab at the Department of Biomedical Sciences as a postdoctoral scholar where he will continue his research journey.
